After weeks of speculation in the media, St James Palace has finally confirmed that Prince William and his wife Catherine are expecting their first child.
The Duchess of Cambridge is reported to be less than 12 weeks' pregnant, but the announcement was made early due to concerns about her health. She is said to be suffering from morning sickness and has been admitted to Edward VII hospital for observation. William is at his wife's side.
Morning sickness is quite common in the early stages of pregnancy, but usually clears up by itself as time goes on, with no lasting serious effects, giving way to the famous "glow" of the expectant mother. The main treatment is to ensure adequate nutrition and hydration, and ensure she gets plenty of peace and quiet.
The rumour-mill has been in overdrive in the last few days, after Prince William accepted a romper suit from a well-wisher during a walk-about in Cambridge. The romper suit had a picture of a helicopter, and said "Daddy's co-pilot". The Prince smiled as he was handed the gift, and said “I'll keep this.”
The baby will be born third in line to the throne, following Prince Charles and Prince William himself. The Commonwealth recently agreed to amend constitutional law so that a female child will have equal right of succession to a son. This means that one day he or she will sit on the throne of the United Kingdom and become Head of the Church of England.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are both aged 30 and had previously declined to comment on their plans for a family after their marriage, saying only that they wanted to settle into married life together first.
Sterk Systems are delighted to be among the first to offer the couple their congratulations on the happy news. A royal baby is something to cheer the whole nation. When the time comes to paint the nursery, we would be delighted to supply a step-ladder!
