You Don't Need a Maths Degree to Calculate the Correct Angle of a Ladder

When using any one of the range of lean to ladders available on the market, achieving the optimum angle with your equipment will make your ladder more stable and provide you with more security when you are working at height.

All types of double ladders and triple ladders are based on a 4 in 1 ratio. This means that for every four metres your ladder goes up, the base of the ladder should go out by 1 metre.

Maintaining this ratio keeps your ladder at exactly the optimum angle for stability and ensures you have the best support possible as you climb.

When the base of your ladder becomes closer to its supporting object than this ratio, it can become unstable and more likely to move. Furthermore, a ladder that is too close to its supporting object can become top heavy and could actually lean away from the wall and fall backwards.

Conversely, if the base of a ladder moves too far from the wall significantly above this ratio the risks of it slipping out from underneath you when you climb are far greater.

As the 75 degrees angle for ladders becomes better known, a greater number of manufacturers are now starting to illustrate the optimum angle for ascension on the stiles of the equipment itself, making it much easier to achieve the correct position.
Once this position is achieved, it is a good idea to tie a rope from the stiles of the ladder to a fixed and stable object. This will not only ensure the ladder is less likely to slip, but it will also ensure that your ladder remains in the correct position to create this optimum climbing angle.

When it comes to step ladders, the equipment itself is created so that the optimum angle is achieved when the ladders are fully opened. As such stability is provided at this angle, it is always wise to ensure that step ladders are fully extended before they are used. If there is not room on site to fully open a step ladder then an alternative form of equipment should be selected, rather than risking using these steps in a less secure position.
