Wood or Aluminium? 3 Key Points to Consider Before Making Your Choice!

If you are buying a ladder there are a number of considerations to take into account. Double or triple ladders are great for those trade professionals such as painters and decorators, who need the extra elevation but with safety in mind. Combination step ladders on the other hand, are available in order to give you a wide range of set-ups, even if you are working in a variety of environments where you might require a free standing or leaning ladder at different times.

In certain scenarios, material is also something to consider. While aluminium or fibreglass are often the ladder of choice, it is important to note that wooded ladders have some clear advantages too. So, should it be wood, aluminium or fibreglass?

Sturdiness

One of the major advantages of a wooden ladder is its sturdiness. Not only is it rigid and fixed, its rungs are made of solid wood, unlike aluminium rungs which are often hollowed out. The support as you climb higher gives you safety without fear of slipping on a rung.

When you're halfway up a double or triple ladder this peace of mind can be vital, making it perfect for those working at height.

Weathering

Both wood and fibreglass are ideal for people who work outside. Able to withstand different climates, without getting too hot or cold, they can be used in a variety of different weathers. And, provided a wooden ladder is properly cared for they can last for years alongside their aluminium and fibreglass counterparts, perfect for window cleaners.

Conductivity

For those professionals who are working at height near power lines, a wooden ladder could be the crucial safety feature that saves them from serious injury or even death as wood is a non-conductive material. One of many attributes which still sees wood used today.

A better option to consider is fibreglass. Available as double or platform steps it's best for this kind of job due to its ability to be exposed to high temperatures without weakening. However, while the density of this man-made material has many advantages, it is far from lightweight.

Portability

Aluminium ladders are lightweight when compared to fibreglass and wooden ladders and are therefore much easier for one person to carry as a result.

They are also less effort to store given that wooden ladders must be kept under a cover when not in use, a factor which must come into consideration whatever your requirements.

This makes for much more flexibility than a wooden ladder and allows you to work easily in a variety of locations and situations, without the need for extra man power.

While both have their advantages, once you have had a think about which situation you need your ladders for, aluminium ladders are often the best choice due to their lightweight nature, ease of use, versatility, price and storage capabilities. However, those working close to power lines should really consider the fibreglass option.
