Top Tips for Buying a Ladder

If you are thinking about buying a ladder to help with jobs such as
clearing gutters, hanging  wallpaper in stairwells or just changing light bulbs, here are the answers to the questions you should be asking.

What Tasks Will You Need a Ladder For?

If you need a ladder for outdoor work at height, which you will be standing on for long periods, you will be glad you chose a ladder with
D-section rungs. This is the best shape for supporting the ball of your foot while climbing and working.

If height is less of an issue, in a bungalow for example, you might consider a combination step ladder, which forms a platform to stand on. For inside jobs, a combination step ladder will be useful for working on stairs because it adjusts to various configurations, a step ladder is also sturdy and secure.

What Height Will You Be Working At?

While a combination or step ladder is ideal for most jobs, if you'll be working on a tall tree or at second storey level, an extension ladder will allow you to reach the job safely. Triple extensions are versatile, but less manoeuvrable.

When considering the length you need, remember that you must not stand on the top 2-3 rungs. The extensions overlap by 4-5 inches (10-12 cm). Factor in these considerations and ensure your ladder rests 2-3 rungs above the job.

What Maximum Loading?

Ladders are rated according to the maximum weight loading, that's you plus any tools/materials. In any instance, buy the strongest you can.

What Ladder Material?

Modern ladders are usually made from aluminium or fibreglass. Aluminium is lightweight and durable, but can be corroded by moisture and salt, or damaged by knocks and falls. Also, aluminium is not recommended for use near electricity. If buying an aluminium ladder ensure it has non-slip feet.

Fibreglass is not affected by moisture, is sturdy and does not conduct electricity, but costs more and may be damaged by exposure to prolonged bright sunlight.
